Fire Damage 3 Essential Fire Safety Tips A smoke alarm is one of the most basic ways you can protect yourself should a fire occur!

At SERVPRO of Catawba County West, we advocate for fire safety measures. Having seen countless home and commercial fires across the county, here are a few essential fire safety tips that we’ve picked up!

  1. Install a smoke detector. This is one of the most basic things you can do to protect yourself from a fire. These devices essentially act as 24-hour guards to make sure you know as soon as it detects smoke in your home. This can give you and your family just enough time to escape!

  1. Never leave the kitchen unsupervised. Cooking-related fires are the leading cause of home fires each year. And often times, they occur because the kitchen is left unsupervised while food is cooking. If you must leave the kitchen, either find somebody else to watch or turn off your appliances until you return.

  1. Keep a fire extinguisher in stock. A fire extinguisher will be your friend should you have a relatively small fire. If you have to deploy one, be sure to aim the spray at the base of the flame. We recommend keeping an extinguisher that is capable of extinguishing A, B, and C class fires, which are the 3 you’re most likely to encounter!

As much as we might wish, it’s not always possible to prevent a fire. So if you do have one, call SERVPRO of Catawba County West at (828) 322-4400!
